I work on the biodiversity crisis in semi-natural terrestrial environments, and on how economic public policy could manage it more effectively. My approach brings together ecology, economics, philosophy and research-creation. I make a point of publishing within each discipline, to root my work in its respective research communities and to test the validity of interdisciplinary research. I founded and lead the BIOECON group at CIRED, which brings together researchers and PhD students around bioeconomic modelling and its epistemological stakes.
I develop a bioeconomic model that couples ecological dynamics with economic decisions — without routing them through a monetary value of nature. The coupling runs through biophysical processes instead. Applied to more than 600 small agricultural regions across France, the model makes it possible to assess how agricultural policies affect biodiversity, and vice versa.
Behind every economic model lie philosophical choices. I examine the ethical foundations of the economics–ecology interface: what does it actually mean to "value" nature? Which conceptions of the human–nature relationship underpin our policies? And how might the notion of planetary boundaries frame our decisions?
How does art catalyse the relationships between science and society? I explore this through research-creation: producing an art-science object for public engagement and analysing it, but also letting artistic practice interrogate research itself. This reflexive strand unfolds at the interface with my own artistic practice (see Studio, textile and digital arts) and in collaboration with other artists.
